Understanding what an essay entails will help you to differentiate between it from letters. The components of essay writing is different from that of letter writing. So, please endeavour to not interchange or intertwine them. An Essay is a piece of writing based on a particular perspective of the writer. This perspective can be divided into four which forms the main types of essays.

Types of Essays

There are four (4) main types of Essays in English:

  1. Descriptive Essay
  2. Narrative Essay
  3. Expository Essay
  4. Argumentative Essay

Descriptive Essay

Just like it's name, this type of essay describes persons, events and other things. One must describe things clearly so that the readers can have the accurate picture in their minds as if they were present.

Narrative Essay

This type of essay tells a story of an event or a sequence of events. Here, this story could be imaginary or non - fiction (real). Sometimes, a combination of both is a plus.

Expository Essay

This is a type of essay that gives a detailed explanation of a particular topic. Here, do not assume the reader knows the topic i.e write it like you are teaching and educating your readers on what they have no idea about. 

Argumentative Essay

It is a type of Essay that tends to present a convincing write up to the readers on a particular topic (i.e Proposing or Opposing) in order to win them over.

Tips for writing an A+ English Essay

Now, the moment we have been waiting for is finally here. I will give you six (6) top tips for writing an  A+ Essay

  1. It is not rushed ; it takes time:
For one to have a good or standard writeup, it takes a quality amount of time to form the content because it involves effective and strategic planning. It centers on organizing your ideas, thoughts and information into your various paragraphs. Arranging it in a chronological order to know which comes first, next and least.

       2. Make research:

Don't just assume a particular thing is that way. Learn or endeavour to make research to get your facts right especially when it involves statistics. This is because the world is evolving and improving . Most of the things you thought was in a particular shape has changed to something else. Research and make current findings to make your write-up believable.

      3. Read other works:

No knowledge is a waste. There is a saying that readers are writers. How can you write when you don't read? Read several works that comes your way. The reason for this is that it will help you improve on your writing skills by assisting in your vocabulary building and you could develop or adopt one or two ideas into your essay or write up.

          4. Choose familiar topics that                                   captures your interest:

When writing, seldom choose topics you are not familiar with. This is because you could get stuck at the middle or even at the beginning because you lack enough information to discuss on such topics. Therefore, choose topics you are most familiar with.

      5. Be time conscious: 

Especially during examination, timing is very important. Develop the outlines of your essay and allocate time to each. This will help you keep track of time. Divide the time allocated based on your three main components of essay writing i.e Introduction ( Beginning), Body (Middle), and Conclusion (End).

       6. Proofread and Edit:

Read your essay again. This time slowly. Do not assume what has been written on a particular line is correct and accurate. Read to correct grammatical errors, wrong punctuations and spellings. This enables you to achieve clarity and readability in your essay. So, the reader understands and is not confused with your points. While proofreading, points you feel were repeated may be erased or paraphrased.
